  1. It's unhealthy!
Soon more & more cos will get into this unethical way of advertising.
Consumers will be most affected as it will do more to confuse than to convince!

  2. After watching this ad i as "chok gaya tha(shocked)" Rin is directly taking on Tide. Its unhealthy and am sure it will go off the air soon, but in meantime Rin would have made all the noise it requires. How come it slipped through Advertisement board.

  3. What is going on in this world... I really dont understand how this type of ad can come into to television. When a ad comes in the television, not only promote the business of a product, it also make the present customer more proud to say that I am using this product. Every time when this ad comes on the television, think about the mindset of its customer. TIDE team, WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING, TRY TO THINK ABOUT YOUR CUSTOMER...stop this immd.

  4. Even I saw tht Ad and totally surprised after seeing tht because as far as my knowledge this is not legal.....It can be possible if thy belong to same bussiness group and thy are trying to kill other brand but RIN belongs to HULL and Tide belongs to P & G......So I am also confused.

  5. Better some action is taken sooner than later, as this would create an havoc in adv. industry.. all big jiants would run after each other leaving consumer with reduced trust on all and a heap of confusion..

  6. It has made all the noise it wanted too, as they say "any kind of publicity is good publicity" now it wouldn;t bother if the ad goes off the air.I was watching a daily soap other night and this ad was coming like nuts, like 20-30 times for a 30 min a daily soap. Usually any ad comes 2-3 times for a give serial !

  10. This is a really shocker in advertising industry...
From indirect reference to one's competitors (as was the case with Cola wars), it has taken a completely new dimension which is quite unhealthy...
And if it continues unabetted, it is sure to lead to an unhealthy environment in the ad world...
Even consumers are going to be affected adversely by this kind of war...

  11. Why should this be considered unhealthy? This will only educate customers further. If there is anything unethical in the claims of HUL then they ultimately stand to loose much more than they could possibly foresee gaining from this. I think, its a healthy practice. Let it be known to the customers that which one is better between the two. The same should also impact the prices of the product. As a customer, why should i pay equally for two products when one may actually be better than the other???

  12. @Juxtaposed messages to employees: Frnd, I just have 3 points to make here:
    1) I feel this is unethical bcoz there are various parameters to decide the quality of a product... and RIN might be superior over TIDE for some of the parameters but there wud still be few parameters in which TIDE would be better...
2)If this was not unethical, then why was it not being followed all these dayz..
3)Coming to the question of consumers paying equally for two different quality of product, I think this sud better be left to consumers to use and then decide which is better...
in simple terms, "Dikhawe par mat jao, apni akal lagao.."

  14. Unhealthy or not, it's illegal in India. Such ads are meant to create a lot of hype. You won't see them on air for more than a week or so. But they'll bombard you with the same ad and then pull it of the air. But everyone will remember it for years to come.

  15. Weird, Confusing, Heights! Is anybody bothered about customers? What if a not so known brand gains out of this ad-war? How much faith should we put onto ads? What happens to serious products like baby foods, disposible injection syringes, over the counter drugs, educational institutions, white goods, FMCG products, is there any body monitoring what television channels broadcast! High time someone checks misleading ads.

  17. i was shocked when i saw this ad in tv...how come HUL can directly blame P&G regarding quality...& on what basis they can claim that their RIN is better than TIDE?? if u have quality product u need not to show its comparison with others it will be sold more because of its quality..i think RIN has advertise in such a way because they didn't have any option to prove their quality...& i think its also illegal in india its really unethical...

  18. Ya, it is really shocking to me as well. However, through HLL must have earned much mora than what they have spent on Ads. My wife went to KIRANA, and after getting TIDE from stores, she declined to take TIDE and asked for RIN.
Imagine around 1crore customers do the same. Its 25 crore business winin 10 days. AD expense is just may be 3-4 crores
P&G will be foolish if it stop this ad. It should make the new ad in such a way to get the customer sentiments towards it

  19. I am seeing this add since Saturday. What I feel is that Rin has taken advantage of 3 days Holiday. Till Monday all legal authorities will be closed. Hence till then Tide cannot bring a stay on the Ad. Hence Rin is showing the Ad continuously so as to do maximum damage to the Tide brand. From Tuesday, Rin will be ordered to take off the Ad from television channels. Thereafter, there will be a legal battle between the two and Rin may eventually have to pay some defamation charges to Tide.
But however, by then maximum damage would have already been done to the Tide brand and perhaps Rin would be able to kill the brand altogether.
So... lets see what happens on Tuesday... :)

  20. What is objectionable and probably deliberately misleading in this ad is that the voice over says "Rin is better than Tide" rather than saying "Rin is better than Tide Naturals". HUL has been smart enough to attack the stringer brand (Tide) in the guise of attacking the weaker variant (Tide Naturals) and this is what makes it unethical. Also if HUL is forced to subsequently compare Rin with "Tide Naturals" then Rin (a mid-tier product) is comparing it with "Tide Naturals" a mass Tier product, which P&G may anyways like. An exaggerated example would be Honda City comparing itself with Maruti 800 (and not SX4 which is in its segment)and saying Honda city is better than Maruti 800. This will only dilute Honda City's equity. The background to such high voltage campaign is that January 2010 saw Rin at it's lowest market share in 10 years and there have been several reports of HUL India team getting the flak for not being able to even maintain shares let alone grow.
